Disaster Deployments

From Design to the Front Lines

While I design training that prepares disaster responders, I also serve on the front lines myself. Since March 2024, I've deployed to 12 disasters across 6 states, accumulating over 130 days of field experience responding to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and fires.

These deployments inform everything I create. When I design training for Disaster Action Team members, I draw from my own experience coordinating relief operations in Asheville after Hurricane Helene. When I teach new volunteers about client services, I'm sharing lessons learned from serving displaced families in Hot Springs after an EF2 tornado destroyed their community.

My dual role as both training program developer and active responder means the training I create reflects the real challenges disaster workers face in the field.

Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina on September 27, 2024, with record-breaking rainfall of over 30 inches in some areas. The hurricane caused at least 108 deaths, destroyed approximately 1,400 homes, and triggered over 200 landslides that wiped out entire neighborhoods in Asheville, Swannanoa, Black Mountain, and surrounding communities. Critical infrastructure collapsed including a section of Interstate 40 at the Tennessee border, while millions lost access to water, electricity, telecommunications, and healthcare.

I deployed as a Sheltering Supervisor, overseeing shelter operations and also supporting lodging coordination for Red Cross workers responding to one of North Carolina's most catastrophic disasters. Over 14 days, I helped manage sheltering services while the Red Cross provided over 1,948 overnight shelter stays and financial assistance to families whose homes were destroyed. The deployment required navigating severe infrastructure damage to sustain the multi-week relief operation.
