Week 12: Mediated Interpersonal Communication
Digital Communication Audit
Instructions
This activity helps you become more aware of your digital communication patterns. Reflect on your typical day and relationships to thoughtfully respond to each prompt.
1Practice Prompt
Track your communication media use for one day (or recall yesterday). What channels did you use most frequently (text, social media, email, phone, video)? Who did you communicate with through each channel? What patterns do you notice?
Don't judge your usage - just observe and describe what you actually do.
2Practice Prompt
Think about your closest relationships. What communication channels do you use with each person? Why those channels? How might the channel affect the quality of your communication?
Consider whether your channel choices are intentional or habitual.
3Practice Prompt
Compare how you present yourself online versus in person. Are there differences? What do you carefully curate online? What feels more authentic? What are the implications of any gaps?
Be honest about the difference between your online persona and your offline self.
4Practice Prompt
What challenges have you experienced with digital communication in relationships? (Misunderstandings, response time expectations, boundaries, etc.) How might you address these challenges going forward?
Think about specific incidents and what might have prevented or resolved them.
