Week 1: Course Foundations & Mindful Communication

Mindful Communication Self-Reflection

Instructions

This activity helps you become more aware of your current communication patterns. Find a quiet space and take about 15-20 minutes to thoughtfully respond to each prompt. There are no right or wrong answers - the goal is honest self-reflection.

1Practice Prompt
Think of a recent conversation that went well. What made it successful? Consider the context, your awareness level, and how you and the other person contributed to the positive outcome.

Try to be specific about behaviors and choices, not just outcomes.

2Practice Prompt
Now think of a conversation that didn't go as well as you'd hoped. Looking back, were you communicating mindfully or mindlessly? What might you do differently?

Avoid blaming the other person. Focus on your own communication choices.

3Practice Prompt
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your overall communication competence? What specific area (knowledge, skill, or motivation) do you most want to improve this semester?

Be honest but kind with yourself. We're all works in progress.

4Practice Prompt
Identify one relationship where you'd like to improve your communication. What specific change could you make this week to communicate more mindfully in that relationship?

Choose something small and achievable. Small changes often lead to big improvements.
